Search engine optimization is, in its most basic form, the art of building your website in such a way that when people use search engines to look for information related to what your site contains, they will find you at the top of the results. However, search engines may be the best way to find information on the internet, but because they are so efficient in what they do they often cause a headache for users. That may sound odd, but when you consider that a search for a popular subject or product can throw up a hundreds of thousands of results, you will understand - who is going to hunt through all that material for find what is wanted? The answer is that people do not - they usually look only at the first few results which is why it is important to optimize your website to come up among the top results.

A search is done when people enter a keyword or phrase for the search engine to look for; the product of this search is pages of links to relevant websites. The ranking of your website in these results will depend on how relevant the search engine thinks your site is to the search terms. That means that the more often the search word or phrase appears in your website, the more relevant the search engine will think your site is to the search. This is an oversimplification because of all the complexities involved, but this is search engine optimization explained in the simplest way.

However, you must be careful not to over use the keywords because not only will the text in your site seem awkward and even unreadable, search engines are now very sophisticated and will remove any site that seem to be stuffed with keywords only for the sake of good search rankings. For example, if your website is dealing with bed sheets and in the 600 words of text on a page you use the phrase bed sheets 80 times, the search engine will know that something is wrong and reject the page. Of course, many “;black” or unethical ways of optimizing a webpage have come up over the years, but with the advanced technology that the search engines use, things like link farms and hidden keywords are soon discovered and the websites indulging in this are banned.

With the huge amount of competition in cyber space, having a good website is no longer enough to ensure success – you have to make efforts to drive traffic to you. The best way to do this is to optimize the site for search engines. There is much more to optimization, but this is search engine optimization explained in a nutshell.
